How To Prevent Cavities

Southpoint Quality Dental

At Southpoint Quality Dental, we want all our patients to enjoy the many benefits that come with having healthy smiles. While most people know that a cavity is a hole in a tooth, not everyone knows that a cavity is the result of the tooth decay process that takes place slowly over time.

Tooth decay develops from a tooth being exposed to sugars and starches in foods which cause harmful acids to develop that attack the protective enamel on teeth. As time goes on, the decay process continues to weaken and destroy the enamel to form a cavity. Here are a few helpful tips for preventing cavities to keep your teeth healthy, strong and beautiful.

Brush Regularly

You should brush your teeth after meals and before bedtime using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Thoroughly and gently brush all the surfaces of your teeth including along the gumline, spending at least two minutes.

Use A Fluoride Mouth Rinse

For added cavity protection, use a fluoride mouth rinse twice daily after brushing.

Visit Your Dentist Twice A Year

You should make a routine of visiting your Stafford & Fredericksburg dentist twice a year for routine oral exams and professional cleanings. If you are more prone to cavities, we may recommend that you visit us more often so we can detect the early signs of tooth decay.

Eat A Healthy Diet And Cut Down On Sweets

You should eat a well-balanced healthy diet consistently and limit your consumption of sugary foods and snacks. Incorporate foods that are good for your teeth into your daily diet like cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Drink Plenty Of Water

When you drink plenty of water throughout the day, it helps with the production of saliva to rinse away harmful bacteria. But instead of drinking bottled water, drink tap water instead as most communities have added fluoride to their water supplies.
